How close together should colors be when tufting?

1 yarn width of space is all you really need. Some people leave more. But if you tuft dense enough, your colours don't really intersect as much. I don't like leaving too much space because when you carve, your yarn doesn't stay put and will continue to splay out in the open space you leave.

The best advice I got is this - with the same color, space very close together. When switching colors, leave a little more space between the two colors, as this will make carving easier.
You can go to regular density, but it’s more work in carving to get them separated and distinct. I use a bigger variety of trimming within a piece so I like to have the flexibility of uniform density. If you separate different colors by 4-6 yarns is a lot easier get your trimmer in there with little hassle.
