How to make the carving easier when tufting?

Situation: Would it make life a little easier as well if I was to leave about a half centimeter gap between the black outline and the colour? I've seen some say to get colours as close together as possible but I've also seen others say carving is easier when a gap is left.

Suggestion: What makes the carving easier with that in my opinion is that the yarn is not overlapped or “stuck” to each other so the carving is smooth.
leaving the space when tufting or separate with some type of smooth thin object before the carve. Either way the separation is what makes for smooth carving.
A lot of us are saying double up the lines on the outline so it adds more density. You lose a lot when carving.
